Examinations and certificates

Right before the new year, students of the 6th grade had their final examinations: 84 students were tested in computers (theoretical knowledge and practice), about 60 students were tested in English (written and pronunciation test). All in all, about 95 % passed the exams.

On January the 23rd we ceremoniously presented their certificates. Many guests, our volunteers and the families of former and future students were invited. The children prepared a show with singing, dancing and speeches in Singhala, English and Tamil. The best and most hard-working ten students were awarded with presents.

Since June 2006, more than 500 students have successfully completed courses at the EDC. This is due to the aid and financial support of our donors, sponsors and volunteers. Thank you very much indeed!

Beginning of the 7th semester

Two days after New Year's Eve the new semester began. We added graphic design to our course offerings. It's the first full year with our new team of teachers who began working together in the 6th semester.
As it also did in the last semester, the number of students increased. Now, about 130 children will participate in our computer course, about 100 children will attend one of our English courses (some of them will also be part of the computer course) and 15 students will learn about graphic design.

Packages from schools in Rathenow, Germany – 100 kilogrammes of presents!

Pupils of the Jahngrundschule and the Jahngymnasium in Rathenow gave us a great surprise! They collected Christmas presents for our students and send them to us in ten big packages, each with a weight of ten kilogrammes. They included stuffed animals, pens, colour pencils, booklets, blocs, toothbrushes, clothes, games and a lot of sweets.
We classified and separated the presents. Most of them were presented to our best students at a ceremony in the end of January. The stuffed animals were given to a local kindergarten and to a kindergarten near Kandy. The children were really happy, as you can see in the picture below. We plan to give most of the games, toothbrushes and pens to the orphanage in Pahalage. The rest, mainly booklets and papers will be used in our courses. Of course, the sweets were consumed very fast.
The lovely letters in some packages will be translated and given to our students in the English class. So the writers in Germany will get an answer soon.
We would like to thank the German children and their parents for the wonderful presents, Frau Koch and Frau Zick for having the idea and organizing it and Frau Berz and Frau Launhardt for that time-consuming packaging and for sending it to us.

 New volunteer in February 2010

A few days ago, our new volunteer from Germany arrived Sonja from Pobenhausen. Mainly she will work with children, do the English class in the EDC and help in the orphanage, but she will also do some nature conservation (planting mangroves, beach cleaning).
Next week she will visit a pre-school and start a new German course in the EDC a challenge which Sonja will definitely fulfil. She is a quiet but hard-working and friendly young woman, who supports us and gives pleasure to the children. Thank you!

Audio book: Luginsland – Ein Turm geht auf Entdeckungstour

The realisation of the audio book project, which should bring two regions (Rathenow in Germany and Aluthgama in Sri Lanka) closer together, took more than one year. It is a joint project of "Spektrum", a school for children with special needs in Rathenow, the association LOTUS international and the Education Development Centre in Aluthgama, supported by different institutions, e.g. the music school Rathenow, the drum group of "Spektrum", Jahngrundschule, Bürgelschule and so on. The kids adopted roles on the CD, as narrator, singer or musician. Dandy's Musikproduktion was responsible for the recording, editing and production and did it very professional, so that everyone was pleasantly surprised by the finished product.
Be surprised and enchanted as well – by a story which combines the beauty and sights of the German Havelland with interesting impressions of the Sri Lankan landscape, culture and lifestyle, mixed with music of both regions. An audio book not just for kids!
On March the 13th, the audio book will be officially presented as part of a charity concert in Rathenow. With buying the CD you support "Spektrum" in Rathenow and the EDC in Aluthgama. Feel free to contact our partners if you want to buy one or more.
Thank you at all participants, sponsors and supporters, who made the realisation of the project possible.

Brandenburger Seniorenverband e.V., Rathenow (Germany) actively supports young and old people in Sri Lanka

The BSV in Rathenow helped and supported us in many ways – on the one hand with material like first aid kits, pens and calculators and on the other hand with balloons and pencils for the children of our Education Centre that were personally given to us by Ms. Dr. Heider and Ms. Haddorf. In addition to that there was a donation of 110€, that was collected to help a home for elders in Sri Lanka and to buy some necessary things like new mattresses and mosquito nets. For further support of our education centre the association took on two educational sponsorships for the children for a sum of 80€. Thank you very much

Caro – Volunteer from March to the end of May

Caro: a very extraordinary volunteer, who developed proposals for her work even before arriving in Sri Lanka. During three months she was working especially in the field of management and teaching, additionally she was working at the turtle hatchery in Kosgoda and assisting in many other activities such as collecting trash and reforestation.
Thereby she has the unique talent to work independently and to develop own ideas as well as to work in a team. Working with her was a real pleasure and brought forward especially tasks concerning the homepage, brochures and further fields.
She got along well with all the team members, was quickly making friends and was very empathetic. Rarely did we have the chance to work with such a talented and committed volunteer and we can’t thank her enough.

Also remarkable is her ability to record special moments and impressions with the camera, the result are gorgeous photos. You have become a member of our big family and you will always be welcome here!

Andre: Volunteer from March to June

Shortly after Caro`s arriving Andre from Germany started his three month lasting stay and therefore was one of only a few male helpers. The newly certified environment engineer assisted us very much in heavy works – he is a really powerful guy. But he also showed his talent as a plant breeder and supported the works in the garden as well as the planting of mangroves and fruit trees. One of his passions definitely was the weekly cleaning of the children tanks and the active exchange with the other volunteers of the turtle hatchery in Kosgoda.

Strong support we also had for our water project, especially concerning the control of water supply units as well as the data registration. Andre also spoiled us with marvellous pictures that he was taking during his round trips. Sincere thanks for the wonderful time.

Sebastian – Volunteer filmmaker in April

Actually, Sebastian wanted to come to Sri Lanka to make some holidays with his girlfriend Caro who had already been working here as a volunteer for some weeks. But there was some initial trouble as his flight couldn’t depart from Germany because of an ash cloud spreading over Europe, so he arrived with one week delay.

Nevertheless, he fulfilled his second mission to produce a small video about our education centre and the work of the volunteers together with Caro and with the support of other volunteer helpers. The result is great and can be watched here - Well done!

By the way, Sebastian has gone into business for himself. So if anyone needs his talent in producing films, don’t hesitate to contact us, we will forward your inquiry to him. Thanks.

Christina – Volunteer from the end of April to May

Christina came here immediately after her holidays in India. Here she also often started roundtrips on her own to discover Sri Lanka and thereby took some wonderful pictures that she provided to us. Thank you so much.

Anyway, Christina was very hardworking and participated in all activities. But what she doubtless liked the most was working at the Dog Care Center – all the puppies had taken a shine on her. Thank you so much for your active help and support.

Maria and Livia – Volunteers from June to July

In their daily lives in Germany, Maria and Livia are working together, here they encountered many new challenges which was not always easy for them - the English and German classes here in the EDC, in the orphanage and the preschool but also the reforestation of the rainforest or the assisting at the Dog Care Center and at the turtle hatchery.

Both were very hardworking and always tried to get the most of a situation. Thereby they socialized actively, made new friends and doubtlessly learned much about the culture and life in Sri Lanka. Thank you so much for your help. We wish you all the best for your futures.

Collective reforestation project in the rain forest on 12th of June

The organization OARM (Organization for Aquatic Resources Management) presently manages a reforestation project in Sinharaja rainforest. In order to support them actively, Nature Volunteers, the Green Pioneer team, the teachers and some students of the EDC met the OARM team for a collective planting activity. In doing so there were planted about 180 young trees that fit into the natural vegetation of the rain forest. A very hard, but also successful work.

Painting of the nearby preschool on the 19th and 20th of June

For about one year we have been working closely with the small nearby preschool. Mainly children of poorer families attend this facility, thus the kindergarten is not as well equipped as others. On the occasion of the benefit concert for the presentation of the audio book Luginsland, which was realized through the collective work of some organizations in Rathenow, we promised to spend part of the earnings to help this preschool.

The biggest wish of the teacher was to give the class room a new coating after ten years of use. Therefore we bought some colours and ordered our painter, but our volunteers also helped actively. First of all the kids were exalted about the new painting. Next item is some repairing on the playground e.g. at the swings.

Astrid – Volunteer from the beginning of July to August

Astrid has come here to Sri Lanka to realize her dreams and to gain ground in this country – as a little access help she had come two months to our education centre to support the preparation and realization of some planned projects and therefore she researched and wrote actively. But she also helped at bigger assignments outdoors for example at our mangrove planting and reforestation program. A big challenge for was doubtless the German class which she supported from time to time. Thank you very much for your cooperation, we wish you all the best for your future!

Anna und Rudolphe – Volunteers in the elephant orphanage at the end of July and beginning of August

One of our new projects which we can provide in collaboration with a partner organization is the working and training for prospective veterinaries at the elephant orphanage in Pinnawala, in which about 90 elephants live at the moment. Anna from Germany and Rudolphe from France accidentally decided to come here in the same space of time to work in Pinnawala. Thus Anna took over some daily tasks while Rudolph completed a training with the veterinaries there employed. It was definitely not always easy for them but anyway we hope you had a good time. Sincerely thanks

Anja and Marcus – Volunteers at the end of July

Anja and Marcus came here rapidly and could unfortunately stay only one week because of our summer break - it’s a pity; we would have liked to keep them here for a longer time. Anja mainly helped teaching in the pre -school and Marcus supported the garden and computer work. Both were very hard working at the mangrove project. They were very kind, funny and nice. Thank you so much, you both.

Together with the volunteers, teachers, some of the students and the Green Pioneers we could start again a mangrove planting at the beach of Beruwala. There we could plant the remaining 400 breeding mangroves and a few days later we could already collect some new layers and pot them, so that they can grow again properly. Sincerely thanks to all the hardworking helpers.

Glasses for Sri Lankan elderly people donated from optician Fischer in Rathenow, Germany

The ability to see of many people worsens when getting older and they need glasses –the same problem exists here in Sri Lanka but only very few can afford the money to get glasses. There are no rents and therefore the elderly are completely depend on their children and their income. If the money is barely enough to survive or the elderly are living in an old people’s home without their relatives they mostly have to get along without glasses.

Optician Fischer from Rathenow has provided us many unused glasses to give older people (especially those in homes) the possibility to gain a little more pleasure and safety in their often comfortless daily life. Thank you so much for your help.

Thanks for the campaign ‚Social Day‘ at Jahngymnasium in Rathenow, Germany

Since 2008 the education centre EDC has got some special support of the Jahn grammar school namely the campaign social day for Sri Lanka whose benefit helps to run the education centre. As the classes for moneyless children are for free, the centre is financed and kept alive mainly through donations and volunteer helpers.

This year the students of the Jahngymnasium have again worked actively and earned about 3000€, for which we want to thank all the students and helpers. This year we even had the chance to thank them face-to-face and to bring along a small present from our education centre.

A new road for the EDC

After long time a big wish from the EDC was realised: On 25/26. of October a road which connects the EDC with the main road was built. Before it was a sandy way, which turned into a muddy not passable path after heavy rainfall.

For this road we have to thank Mr. Piyal Nishanta, member of Area Council (Western Province), who kept his promise for the construction of this road.
Therefore, we would thank very much Mr. Piyal, all co-operators and the road construction team, which worked several days to finish the project.

Help for Arindi - she has LEUKEMIA

A special request from our EDC. Little Arindi (5 years) is the niece from our computer teacher Buddhika - she was diagnosed as having Chronic Leukaemia (blood cancer). Since, she is treated with a medicine called Glivec. A daily dose of 200mg is vial for her, but the medicine is expensive - 200mg cost about 40€. Arindi's family is facing financial problems now and asked us for help. So every support is very welcome.
We are collecting donations via our German partner organisation (as transfer cost within Europe are cheaper): LOTUS international e.V. , Volksbank Rathenow E.G. , BIC: GENODEF1RN1 , IBAN: DE33 1609 1994 0001 0174 46, Use: Medicine for Arindi

First support for Arindi with leukaemia

After the first letters and emails to friends is was possible to receive a first support for Arindi. The main help came from the Australia branch of the producer company of the medicine, which Arnindi needs to take – they gave us the contact to the branch in Sri Lanka and a foundation which supports families from children with cancer. Through them it was finally possible to receive free medicine for Arindi, which we are very happy about. Furthermore, friends and family members donated about 450€ which was handed over to Arindi’s family to pay also the expensive tests and extra expenditures.
We thank very much all supporters and people who helped as well as our German society LOTUS international e.V. for collection of the donations.

Maria – New volunteer in December

Since beginning of December we’ve got a helpful and charming young lady from Berlin - Maria. She is helping mainly with teaching in English and German, which is very popular for the boys at the EDC. Also in the kindergarten and orphanage she educates the children and plays games.
Maria is all-round talented and helps with every work necessary, like in the management field, with the beach cleaning or the mangrove program. She works very independently and prepares herself very well, therefore work with her is a pleasure.
Thank you very much for all your support and everyday good work.

Beach Cleaning and environmental seminar on December 24th

The last day before Christmas holidays we decided to do something good together with the teachers, students and volunteers, so we went for beach cleaning to the Beruwala beach.
It started at 7.30 am in the morning – first with a small introduction to the students why those waste collection events are important. Due to light rain showers the waste collection at the beach was a little belated, but could be successfully completed with all helpers.
After the work everyone got refreshments and participated a small environmental seminar, before their leave to holidays. Thank you to all helping hands.

Christmas 2010 in Sri Lanka – a little different than normal

Christmas tree- and decoration made from palm leaves, grilled tropical reef-fish together with a light white wine and a small present for everyone. This Christmas was just a little different than normal – especially without stress and cold.
We were in a good company with our volunteers Fredi from Malta, Maria from Germany and Marion from France (picture from left). It was a very nice and convivial evening. Thank you very much for it and especially the creative designing of the Christmas decoration.
